The Fear of Visibility: What It Is, How to Get Over It (plus 20+ B-Roll Ideas to Help You Create Better Content Now)
Why The Fear of Visibility Is So Common
The fear of visibility is one of the most common challenges I see with entrepreneurs, creatives, and founders. It’s that nagging voice in your head wondering if you’ll be judged for showing up online. Maybe you’re worried your content isn’t polished enough. Maybe you feel like your workspace or studio isn’t Instagram-worthy. Or maybe you’re struggling to figure out how to blend your creative and business sides in a way that feels authentic. Whatever it looks like for you, know this: you're not alone. This is a conversation we’re having often in the Smart Girls Mastermind and Out-of-Office Club. And even in creative industries like music or art, visibility fears show up.
But here’s the truth: your audience wants to connect with the real you. They don’t want the overly perfect version of your life. They want to know the person behind the business, behind the art, behind the brand. The more you show up, the easier it becomes. Visibility is a muscle you build over time.
How To Shift Your Mindset Around Visibility
The first step in overcoming visibility fears is shifting your mindset. Instead of seeing visibility as self-promotion, view it as service. You’re not just posting content for the sake of it; you’re creating connection. Every post, story, or share is an opportunity for someone to resonate with your story, your expertise, or your work. Numbers can be deceiving. If only 15 people like your post, that’s still 15 humans who are engaging with your work. If 2 people save your content, that could be 2 future clients. Focus on quality over quantity.
Remember: even the biggest creators struggle with perfectionism. But what sets them apart is consistency and courage. The more you show up as yourself, the more your perfect people will find you and connect with you. Realness always wins.
Content Creation Hacks To Show Up With Confidence
One of my favorite strategies for staying visible without the overwhelm is creating B-roll content. B-roll is all the behind-the-scenes footage of your life and work that doesn’t require a perfect setup or polished look. Think of it as capturing candid moments: working on your laptop, making your morning coffee, journaling, walking through your city, or celebrating a small win.
This type of content allows you to share your life without needing to film or photograph yourself talking all the time. It’s relatable, authentic, and easy to create. You can film short clips during your day and save them for future use. This way, you always have a bank of content ready to go. B-roll helps you stay present with your friends and family while still creating content that connects with your audience.
Tips For Capturing Authentic B-Roll Content
Here are some easy ideas for B-roll that you can film today without a fancy setup:
Morning routine: making coffee, journaling, lighting a candle
Behind-the-scenes: working on your laptop, planning content, packing orders
Daily rituals: walking your dog, setting up your workspace, relaxing at the end of the day
Creative process: sketching, painting, writing, brainstorming
Life moments: exploring your city, going to a local cafe, reading a book
If you want to level up your content creation process, consider booking a Peerspace studio once a month. Spend a few hours filming multiple B-roll clips and batch your content for weeks to come. This is a strategy I personally love because it allows me to create content efficiently without needing to film every day.
